Haunted Tonight...

I'm haunted tonight.
Room 109
there's a ghost wandering in the evening sun
alone, by the rowing lake
waiting for you

I'm haunted tonight.
I pull you down onto the bed, laughing
the bottle of red, cheese, olives...
later, two ghosts
stand in awe of the silver ribbon of water

I'm haunted tonight.
On waking, I can touch you! -
after all this time.
Two ghosts at the bush eating blackberries
buying strawberries in Oakham
A ditch of nettles

I'm haunted tonight.
A ghost's profile beside me, breathing
Pale sky at the window, two trees.
Making early morning tea, I see
your things in the bathroom
you are really here!
breakfast tray knock

I'm haunted tonight.
Two ghosts picking sloes
The Green Dragon
strawberries and champagne and Scrabble
the arms of a ghost around me in the dark
I can still touch you

I'm haunted tonight
the sweetest sight is your eyes in the morning
a barge at the lock
passes two ghosts on the bench
where you rested your aching hip

A comic pilgrimage for afternoon tea
The railway station: pink hat, lavender rucksack, blue suitcase.

I can't touch you.
I'm haunted tonight.
